Our Vergers, MCs & MAs
What is a verger?
A verger is a lay minister who supports clergy in organizing and leading worship services. Think of the role as a blend of ceremonial guide, hospitality coordinator, and behind-the-scenes logistics expert. The position traces back to medieval times, when the verger's job was literally to escort and protect religious processions through the streets — warding off animals and disruptive bystanders. That tradition survives today in the form of a robed verger leading processions while carrying a ceremonial staff called a virge.
Where did vergers come from?
The verger's role reaches back to the earliest centuries of the Church, sharing common ground with ancient minor orders like porter and acolyte. Historically, vergers maintained the physical church space, prepared for liturgical services, managed the behavior of worshipers, and even dug graves. Cathedral records from Rochester, Lincoln, Exeter, and Salisbury suggest the office existed at least as far back as the 1500s.
What is a verge?
The verge is the ceremonial staff a verger carries in procession. The word comes from the Latin virga, simply meaning rod or wand — and it's the root of the word "verger" itself. The verge descends from the ornate maces once carried before civic and church dignitaries, similar to the ceremonial Maces of State still used in the British Parliament today. Originally a practical tool for clearing a path, the virge is now largely symbolic. Its design varies widely, but one end typically features a cross or other Christian symbol. A longer version, known as a beadle, was traditionally used to lead academic processions.
