Senior Vergers

The Role of Student Verger:

Honoring and Developing Our Future Leaders

The Student Verger is a distinguished honor bestowed upon incoming high school seniors who have demonstrated exceptional dedication, service excellence, and strong personal character throughout their time in the Acolyte Corps at Saint Michael.

This active volunteer position spans the entirety of the senior year, allowing these young leaders to serve alongside adult Vergers at traditional services held in the Church. While Student Vergers fulfill many of the same responsibilities as their adult counterparts, expectations are thoughtfully calibrated to reflect their experience level and academic commitments.

Student Vergers represent the future leadership of our liturgical ministry and are selected based on their:

  • Consistent reliability and punctuality in service

  • Understanding of liturgical practices

  • Positive attitude and collaborative spirit

  • Willingness to mentor younger acolytes

  • Exemplary representation of Saint Michael's values

This opportunity provides meaningful leadership experience while honoring each student's commitment to the church community before they transition to college or other pursuits.

Selection and Qualification Process

  1. Student Vergers may be selected in their junior year to serve throughout their senior year of high school, based on faithful service.

  2. Student Verger selection occurs annually with a review of qualifying candidates in the Spring. A determination is made by the Acolyte Executive Committee (Acolyte Steering Committee Chair, Chair-Elect, Head Verger and Head Master of Ceremonies) with final approval by the Rector.

  3. Students who return from college or resume full-time service must complete a minimum of one year in an acolyte role before being considered for the Adult Verger position.

Expectations of Service

Commitment to the Role: The Student Verger position is a privilege, and those who hold it are encouraged to approach each service with the seriousness and reverence it deserves, recognizing that their presence and example speak on behalf of the entire ministry.

Scheduling: Student Vergers are expected to serve as an acolyte at least once per month. Every effort will be made to schedule them in a Verger role at least once monthly as well.

Preparation: Student Vergers must arrive 45 minutes before each service to assist with setup and to coach and support acolytes.

Absences: When unable to attend a scheduled service, Student Vergers are responsible for submitting a substitute request via MSP and confirming that someone has accepted it before their absence.

Training & Recruitment: Student Vergers are expected to assist with acolyte recruitment and to participate in monthly training sessions, currently held on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 1:00 PM (sessions are only scheduled when new acolytes are present).

A Legacy of Service

SMAA’s Student Verger program reflects the very best of what Saint Michael's Acolyte Corps strives to be — a community that nurtures faith, develops character, and inspires a lifelong love of liturgical ministry. Those who serve in this role join a tradition of dedicated young leaders who have given generously of their time and talent to this church. We are grateful for each Student Verger's commitment and look forward to celebrating all that they will contribute during this special season of their journey with Saint Michael.
