Thurifer & Boat Bearer

Acolytes play a vital role in the worship life of Saint Michael & All Angels, helping to lead the congregation in prayer and praise through their faithful service at the altar. This page outlines the responsibilities of the Thurifer and Boat Bearer from quick reminders to a full review of what to expect, how to prepare, and how to carry out this ministry with confidence and care. ​

Quick Reminders

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before service.

  • Ask Verger or MC if there are any changes to the service to be aware of.

  • Check diagrams to be sure know where stopping during opening and closing procession

  • THFR follows the PV and is followed by the BOAT.

  • Always look to verger for movement on entering and retiring

  • Ensure there is enough space to safely swing the Thurible

  • The Thurifer Team processes in the Gospel Procession.

  • The Thurifer Team censes the Altar during the Offertory.

  • The Thurifer Team processes in the Offertory Procession if possible.

  • Make sure to allow the Thurible to cool and dispose of the coals.
