Chalice Bearers
Acolytes play a vital role in the worship life of Saint Michael & All Angels, helping to lead the congregation in prayer and praise through their faithful service at the altar. This page outlines the responsibilities of the Chalice Bearer from quick reminders to a full review of what to expect, how to prepare, and how to carry out this ministry with confidence and care.
Quick Reminders
-
Check the diagrams to be sure you know where to stand.
-
Determine the height of the CBs for procession placement (shortest to tallest).
-
Determine if any CBs are doing double duty or serving as Lectors.
-
At the Transept, turn to your assigned side. First to arrive stands closest to the Chancel Rail opening; others step to the outside.
-
Shortest sits in sedilia next to priest.
-
For kneeling, chalice bearers will be at the front of the rail not on the side
-
During communion you will always be with your partner even when refilling wine-except if a priest grabs one chalice to go serve someone in the congregation.
-
If you drop the purificator, there is an extra behind the reredos. Let your partner take the row and just begin together again on the next round.
-
At the conclusion stand with chalice at chest with purificator on top of chalice facing the alter until signaled with a bow to return to reredos
-
Grab hymnal/program to process out
-
For retiring procession the tallest will lead out (following the Server) and be on the front of the alter next to the candle and others file in next to the person in front of them (see diagrams)
-
After service, please clean up the Altar space.
